What's New in Plastic Surgery

Silicone Breast Implants approved by the FDA

For those of us who have been waiting since 1992 for the FDA to release silicone breast implants to the general public- the waiting is over! As of November 2006, any woman 18 years of age or older undergoing any type of breast implant operation (first time augmentation, implant replacement, or a breast lift with implants) may use silicone breast implants. Because silicone implants are softer and thus more natural feeling, it is believed that many of the more than 400,000 women in this country who undergo breast implant surgery each year will opt to use silicone instead of saline.

For more information or if you think you might be a good candidate for silicone gel implants, please contact our office at 954-630-2009 for your complimentary consultation!

In the News:

FDA Approves Restylane for Facial Wrinkles

Approximately 8 million Americans chose to have cosmetic plastic surgery during 2003, and the New Year should bring an increase in these numbers during 2004. More and more patients are seeking less invasive procedures with little or no down time and immediate results. Restylane (another alternative to collagen that may last longer and requires no allergy testing) now joins two other injectables approved by the FDA for the treatment of facial wrinkles (Botox and Collagen). Several new products are also on the horizon, including Artecoll, touted as a more permanent alternative than either Collagen or Restylane. Restylane is now available in our office and is priced at $500 per syringe.

Regenerin- The Surgical Support Program Has Arrived!

Nutraceutical Surgical Support Program Containing Healing Activators

Regenerin™ Surgical Support is an intensive, two-step nutraceutical regimen recommended to assist patient recovery after a surgical procedure. Regenerin™ Pre-Operative nutrient supplement packets are used prior to surgery to build nutritional reserves and prepare the body for surgery. Regenerin™ Post-Operative nutrient supplement packets are used after surgery to enhance the body’s natural healing process and support immune responsiveness, thus helping to speed recovery and promote proper tissue repair. The price for this package is $100 and includes seven days of preoperative treatment and thirty days of postoperative treatment.

Plastic Surgery Procedures Increase 32% in 2006

More than 8.7 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in 2006, representing a 32% increase over the 6.6 million procedures performed during 2003. The rise in procedure rates seems to reflect the public's growing realization of the positive change plastic surgery can bring to their lives under the right conditions, says ASPS President Rod Rohrich, M.D.

Perhaps most notable were increase in minimally invasive procedures (up 41%) and body contouring following gastric bypass (bariatric) surgery (up 36%). More than 52,000 post-bariatric procedures were performed, including tummy tucks, breast lifts, lower body lifts, arm lifts and thigh lifts.

The most popular surgical procedures for 2004 included: rhinoplasty (356,554), liposuction (320,022), breast augmentation (254,140), eyelid surgery (246,633) and facelift surgery (246,633). The most popular non-surgical procedures included: Botox injections (2.9 million), chemical peels (995,238), microdermabrtasion treatments (935,984), laser hair reduction (623,297) and collagen injections (576,255).
