Microdermabrasion
In the quest for youthful, vibrant skin, men and women share a
common desire: to look their best, regardless of age. Traditional options,
ranging from chemical peels to laser resurfacing to dermabrasion, may not be
the right therapy to address your specific concerns. Microdermabrasion was
developed as an alternative to these more invasive procedures.
Microdermabrasion is a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure that
offers safe and controlled removal of the outer, dead layers of the skin. The
remaining skin is more smooth, fresh and rejuvenated. This procedure utilizes
medical grade microcrystals that are propelled at a high speed against the
surface of the skin. Debris and used crystals are simultaneously vacuumed into
a sealed waste container and disposed of. This technique has been featured in Vogue
and Elle as the "lunchtime peel" because there is no
downtime associated with these treatments. Afterwards, you may safely apply
makeup and continue with your normal daily activities.
Microdermabrasion is performed in approximately 30 to 45
minutes and is a very comfortable treatment. It may stand alone as a treatment
method, or it may be used to complement your home care regimen of skin care
products.
Some of the uses of microdermabrasion are listed below:
° To improve skin tone, making it softer and more smooth with
a healthy glow
° To provide a more even skin color for patients with altered
pigmentation
° To diminish large, unsightly pores or acne scars
° To reduce the appearance of stretch marks
° To reduce the frequency and severity of acne breakouts
° To reduce fine lines and wrinkles for a younger appearance
How does Microdermabrasion work?
In addition to removing the outer, dead layers of the skin
through the mechanical action of the microcrystals, the application of
microdermabrasion actually stimulates blood flow to the surface of the skin.
This enhances the oxygenation of the skin, increasing cell renewal and
regrowth of collagen (the structural proteins giving skin its strength). The
massaging action of the treatment creates a mild flushing and cleansing effect
below the surface of the skin, resulting in a vibrant, healthy appearance and
complexion.
Am I a candidate for Microdermabrasion?
The most ideal candidates for microdermabrasion are those
people who are very active and don't want to take the longer recovery time
needed for laser resurfacing, chemical peels, or dermabrasion. Other ideal
candidates are those who are sensitive to the chemicals involved in other
treatment methods, or those who are not responding well to acne medications.
How do I prepare for a treatment?
When you arrive for your microdermabrasion treatment, you will
be asked to remove your makeup because this prevents the even application of
the microcrystals.
What should I expect during my treatment?
The microdermabrasion treatment is performed in our treatment
room, requires no anesthesia, and allows you to return to your normal daily
activities immediately following the treatment.

What should I expect after my treatment?
Results are noticeable after the first treatment. Your skin
will appear light pink with a soft texture. More aggressive treatments may
cause the pinkness to persist for the remainder of the day of treatment.
However, it is safe to reapply your makeup and/or facial moisturizer following
the procedure.
You should wear a sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure of
the treated area for the first 24 hours following a treatment, because the
treated area is initially more sensitive to the effects of ultraviolet
radiation. Otherwise, your normal daily activities may be resumed immediately.
May I have multiple treatments?
Dr. Revis will make a recommendation to you regarding the
number of treatments that may be necessary to achieve the results you have in
mind. Treatments are usually performed in a series of six, with the first
three treatments being performed at weekly intervals followed by the remaining
three treatments spaced two weeks apart.
Following this initial series, you may choose to have
maintenance treatments every four to six weeks.
May I have Microdermabrasion if I am using skin care
products, retinol products, or having superficial peels performed?
Yes. In fact, microdermabrasion is an excellent complementary
treatment for most skin care regimens. Dr. Revis often alternates superficial
peels with microdermabrasion to achieve the maximum benefit for his skin care
patients.
How much does Microdermabrasion cost?
Treatment prices vary depending on the area(s) to be treated,
but they are comparable to the price of a facial and are much more healthy for
your skin. Facial microdermabrasion costs $100 per individual treatment, or a
6-pack is priced at $500. Also check for our monthly specials for
