Tips for Achieving the Best Scar Results:

  1. Avoid the sun! Sun exposure on new scars can cause permanent hyperpigmentation.
  2. Take care of your post-op incision and follow Dr. Revis’s orders to help prevent inflammation, which could worsen your scar’s appearance.
  3. Use Silagen. Clinical studies have proven the effectiveness of silicone gel in the prevention and treatment of scars, and it is recommended by scar experts as a preferred first-step treatment to get the best results.
  4. Be consistent and persistent! Use as directed every day for the full recommended length of treatment. Silicone works by forming a layer over the skin; it has to be on the skin to create the barrier.

What is a scar?

When skin is injured our body makes collagen to fill the gap. This collagen is like a uniform cement patch. There are no pores and sweat glands within this patch, making it look different from the normal surrounding skin. Therefore, to achieve the most natural look this patch should be as thin as possible. Silagen helps our skin reduce the thickness of scars.

How long does scar healing take?

It can take as long as one or two years for some scars to fade to their final appearance. In the first three months most scars appear pink. This is due to an overgrowth of blood vessels within the area, which is intended to help bring a better blood supply for healing. After healing has completed, these blood vessels usually shrink and the color usually fades. After that, the remaining scar will slowly shrink if normal healing occurs.

Why are some scars thicker than others?

As skin heals, too much collagen is intentionally made. An enzyme called collagenase melts the extra collagen and the body tries to leave only what is needed for the repair. If the healing cells do not make enough collagenase, too much collagen is left. This will result in a thick scar.

Can it make a thick scar look better?
