Tissue glues have long been recognized for their potential to hasten wound healing, reduce postoperative complications, and decrease the need for drains following surgery. In the past, however, these adhesives were prepared on the day of surgery from the patient’s own blood. This involved a complex process that required a pint of blood be drawn from the patient just prior to surgery. The natural clotting factors were then isolated and concentrated for application directly in the surgical wound, while the remaining red blood cells were then re-injected (auto-transfused) back into the patient’s bloodstream. This process was expensive, time consuming and not without potential complications.

A new solution is now available that provides a better alternative for many patients. Tisseel, produced by the Baxter Healthcare Corporation, is an FDA approved fibrin sealant now available off the shelf. It firmly seals tissues, minimizes blood and fluid collections, and has no local or systemic side effects.

Dr. Revis has gained considerable experience with this product and recommends its use for facelift (rhytidectomy) and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedures. This product minimizes bleeding and fluid collection, rapidly re-adheres tissue flaps elevated during surgery, and minimizes or in some cases even avoids the need for a drain postoperatively.
