Surgery Patients: How Much Protein Do You Need for Optimal Recovery?

When you have a surgical wound, it is important to consume greater amounts of high quality protein during the recovery period. This is because your protein needs during the healing and scar maturation period are roughly double your normal daily requirements.

Depending on your overall health status, the recommendations would be:

  • Between 70 and 105 grams of quality protein per day for a 125 pound person
  • Between 84 and 126 grams of quality protein per day for a 150 pound person

What Are the Symptoms of Insufficient Protein?

Fatigue and/or Weakness: Not just the feeling that we didn't get enough sleep last night, but deep fatigue or weakness where it's hard to get through the day.

Hair Loss: Often preventable simply by increasing your protein intake to the proper recommended levels.

Surgical Complications: The best single predictor of how well you will heal after surgery is your protein status. If your protein status is inadequate, your body will heal more slowly, sometimes very slowly.

How Can I Get Enough Protein?

  • 1 ounce of meat (the weight after the shrinkage of cooking) provides about 7 grams of protein
  • 1 egg contains about 7 grams of protein
  • An 8 ounce cup of milk contains 8 grams of protein
  • 1 scoop of UNJURY provides 20 grams of protein, available in Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla and Unflavored varieties

UNJURY Ingredient Quality: Whey Protein Isolate

Unjury Protein SupplementThe source of complete protein in UNJURY is Whey Protein Isolate. Whey Protein Isolate has more protein, and less lactose and minerals, than Whey Protein Concentrate, a common ingredient in many supplements. Because Unjury uses only Whey Protein Isolate, UNJURY has a cleaner taste, not chalky, not gritty and without aftertaste.

The amount of protein you get in "Whey Protein" ingredients can vary widely. Whey Protein Concentrate is different from the Whey Protein Isolate which is used in UNJURY.

UNJURY Ingredient Quality: Protein

Not all protein has the same value to your body. In fact, for the most important use of protein – building and replacing cells – some proteins get a score of zero.

The reason for the difference among proteins is different amino acid profiles. Proteins are made of amino acids, and there are 20 different ones in the human body. Of the twenty, 9 of them must be consumed to meet your daily needs. These 9 amino acids are called Essential or Indispensable. We'll call them "EAAs".

You need the 9 EAAs in certain proportions, and so there is a protein scoring system called Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Scoring (PDCAAS). It is supported by the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences, as well as the World Health Organization. The Whey Protein Isolate in UNJURY receives a PDCAAS score of 100, the highest possible score.
